Someone was breathing down Pizzolatto’s neck too: HBO programming president Michael Lombardo. He was expected to carry the heft of a franchise HBO desperately needed with Netflix and its new hit House of Cards breathing down its neck. The juxtaposition of his dense, portentous dialogue with Fukunaga’s weightless direction and McConaughey’s ability to elevate scenery chewing into an art form had added up to something spectacular. He had, in fact, cranked the bare-boned script out in less than a week when the TV suits who’d bought his novel, Galveston, asked I’m if he had any other ideas knocking around.īut Pizzolatto, then aged 39, was a visionary –another way of saying he was a control freak. It wasn’t that True Detective 1.0 had been his life’s work. While Fukunaga contemplated his future (last year he was unveiled as Danny Boyle’s replacement on the next Bond movie) Pizzolatto was suffering a chronic case of difficult second album blues. Thus the mystery: why weren’t we seeing anything of True Detective year two? In that moment, True Detective was arguably second only to Game of Thrones (if that) as the network’s hottest property. Shooting was already underway when HBO put out its “what’s to come” trailer. So by the end of that year anticipation for more True Detective was as feverish as the rural Louisiana hellscape which Pizzolatto and director Cary Fukunaga had evoked so vividly in their first run together. It did so by casting big name movie stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as odd couple police partners and, even more so, by introducing a hint of the supernatural to its gristly murder-mystery. The original True Detective, released on an unsuspecting world on January 12 2014, had remade the rules of procedural television. That all we ever knew of True Detective season two was that blink-and-its gone notice. Some five years on, as HBO – together with its UK partner Sky Atlantic – counts down to the arrival this weekend of the third instalment of Nic Pizzolatto’s gritty crime anthology, all involved may look back and wish that the blankness had endured. But there was not a glimmer of actual footage. The words “True Detective Season Two” flashed briefly. Amid the deafening Game of Thrones teasers and clips of Veep and Girls, one prominent omission stood out. On DecemHBO released a typically clamorous preview of its programming for the year ahead. ![]()
